I want to chat briefly about something that’s immensely important. Throughout my ministry, I’ve found that people often give Satan way too much credit. Now, I don’t want to diminish Satan. He is real and he is powerful. He should be taken seriously as he is not a pushover. He holds so many in bondage. But no one is more of an enemy to your joy than you.

You can’t blame Satan for your choices. The devil didn’t make you do it. He tempted you, but you chose to give in. He shot fiery darts, but you chose to drop the shield of faith. No one, not even Satan, has stolen more joy from you than you. You are your greatest enemy.

See, every sin comes down to you believing a lie instead of the truth. Let’s take lust and pornography for example. When you decide to look at pornography, you are believing that in this moment it will bring you the most joy. You believe that it will make you feel loved and appreciated. Whatever you’re looking for, you believe that it’s going to provide it. But it won’t.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”  Matthew 5:8

Scripture says that the pure in heart will see God. I’ll admit that the lie is from Satan, that he is using your good desire against you but you’re making the choice. Not him. Just like Eve decided to believe the lie and eat the fruit. In that moment, you believe that joy is found on a computer screen but it’s not. Gazing upon the face of God is infinitely better than gazing at naked women on your cell phone.

I could continue to go through different sins and talk through the lies that are being believed. Each sin, at its root, is either believing a lie or doubting the truth.

Here’s why this is important. When you blame Satan for your sin you’re focusing on the wrong thing. Satan is never going to stop tempting you on this side of eternity. And when you focus on that, you’ll continue to be stuck where you are. When you blame him for everything, you’ll never get to the root of the lie you’re believing and you’ll never replace it with Gospel truth.

Christian, you are your greatest enemy. But here’s the good news: even you can’t stop you. We are more than conquerors through Christ. Satan will whisper in your ear. Sin will call your name. But you do not have to answer. If you’re stuck in sin, stop blaming Satan. Dig to the root, to the lie and replace with Gospel truth.

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Romans 8:37-39
