Did the title get your attention? I read that you’re suppose to use attention grabbing titles for blogs. I guess if you’re reading this, then it worked.
Let me start off by being clear, I think it’s great to invite people to church but it is not the same as inviting people to Jesus. And inviting them to Jesus is so much better than inviting them to church so your pastor can invite them to Jesus. So, invite them to church for sure but also be “missional” and invite them to Jesus by living as a missionary where God has placed you. This is how God has decided to change the world and expand His Kingdom!
But, what does it look like to live like a missionary where God has placed you? It simply means living life with others. I’ve found that a simple acronym can be helpful and I hope it helps you: BLESS
Begin with prayer
I will pray for the people in my life and the places that I’m in.
I will listen to and discover the needs of others and the places where God is at work.
I will share meals and spend time with people in my life.
I will respond to the needs of others and help them in practical and impactful ways.
I will share the story of Jesus and what He is doing in my life with others.
Lets flesh out each of those a bit:
Who do you live, work, and play with that is far from God? Pray that God would create spiritual curiosity in them, and then spend time with them.
Where does pain exist in your area? Pray for that place.
Who makes decisions in your area? Pray for integrity.
Where do people gather in your area? Pray for community.
Where do people spend money in your area? Pray for provision.
Before you can invite others to Jesus, you need to listen to them first — their hopes, pains, challenges and dreams. In your interactions going forward, be a learner. Ask questions. Get to know someone else without the intention to talk about yourself. Don’t assume you know them and just practice being present.
Eating is one of the best ways to put an acquaintance on the fast track to friend. Who can you eat with (or have coffee with) that is far from God? A co-worker at lunch? A neighbor over the weekend? Another family at the park? Is there a place that you regularly visit (coffee shop, gym, park, etc)? Ask God to give you opportunities to eat with people.
Who can you serve? Who do you know that has a practical need? Ask them how you can help them. Oftentimes, asking how you can pray for someone will reveal ways in which you can be an answer to prayer.
At some point, you’ll have to talk about Jesus. No one is going to come to a saving faith in Christ because you were nice. But, they might listen to your story about what Jesus has done if your life. Don’t feel like you need to share it all at once. Use bite-sized chunks and share what God is doing in your life.
How do you start?
Every day, intentionally look for ways to BLESS others.
With people you connect with on a regular basis, commit to asking each other this question, “Who did you BLESS this week?” Accountability will keep you from falling away from this practice.
I pray that this will help you begin to engage with those God has put in your life. Don’t actually stop inviting people to church, but don’t let that be all you do. Invite them to Jesus.
